Motorcycle Batteries
Sealed AGM motorcycle batteries are called "starved electrolyte"
batteries, which means the separator material absorbs the
electrolyte and the whole battery is sealed. There are no gases to
vent and the acid cannot spill. With this design, you never have to
add water to the battery and you can mount it in any position except
inverted. Because there is no acid to worry about, you can use these
batteries in close proximity to people.
Once activated, AGM sealed lead acid, spill-proof batteries are
truly maintenance free. Sealed AGM and gel batteries also have lower
self-discharge rates and longer lives than wet batteries. They have
higher resistance to vibration than wet maintenance-free batteries
as well as a lower deep discharge (dead battery) failure rate.
Unlike wet batteries, you can use them near salt water without
danger. They are quick to recharge. One other important benefit of
these batteries is that they can be shipped easily, without special
hazardous shipping restrictions.
Motorcycle batteries are deep cycle batteries, used in
applications where the battery is discharged between 20 and 80
percent of its capacity and then recharged during use. This is one
complete cycle. Motorcycle batteries can have up to 200-500 cycles
per year. This type of battery construction is also used for RVs,
boats, wheelchairs, and golf carts.
Lower Cost of Ownership
When buying deep cycle batteries, consider the total cost of
ownership. They can seem expensive at first, but when you realize
their long life and faster recharging times, their total cost of
ownership is usually lower. If you are not sure which battery your
bike needs, our online database conveniently cross-references
manufacturers and battery types so you are sure to find the right
battery for your motorcycle.
Due to their small size, motorcycle batteries require low-current
charging. Be sure that you have the right charger because those that
are used to recharge wet batteries usually cannot be used on AGM and
gel batteries. Using them will shorten the life of your battery.
Match the charger for the type of battery you are charging.
